Tough and tender describes the main characters, the subject matter, and basically the story as a whole. Cothern isn't afraid to write about volatile issues and she does so with the perfect balance of sensitivity and frankness. She has a way of creating good guys who are genuinely real people with hard decisions to make--the fact that they don't always make the right decisions contributes to that genuineness. She deftly escapes the trap of presenting everything in black and white. It's the shades of gray that are the best and most alluring part of this story. I can see where this may not be the right book for everyone and am glad i didn't know too much about it up front. If i had i likely would have chosen to skip it. That would have been a mistake. This is truly an excellent story that is at once engaging and enlightening. Very rarely have a read a book in this genre that tests my beliefs and alters my feelings about specific issues.Product details

I love all of Brenda's books, and this is another great one. Highly recommended! Full of action, danger and twists I didn't see coming. I would love to read more about ICE and the MC Rick and Brew.
Fantastic cover art for the book. I enjoyed the storyline and realistic qualities of the book. Rad was a big surprise. JoJo was a good addition to the story. Thanks Brenda.
I really did like the first 80% of this book. The second half was a little hard to take. There is rape in this book no matter how you write it, or try to say it was enjoyable for the victim. I was a little shocked to see how the writer tried to make it seem like Rick wanted it. I felt that for some readers this might be a trigger for them. I am usually pretty good at handling rape in the books I read, but that's when it's presented in a way that's not making the victim's seem like they are encouraging it. I also found that the rapist is excused from the action in this story... like in the end it was okay that it happened. Over all I felt that Brenda did a good job the majority of this book, but I could have done with out Rick being forced. If you are sensitive to this kind of thing I wouldn't recommend this book.
Brenda has written such a great story of love and kink and putting the two together beautifully. Yes there's a story in there of trafficking and the Russian mafia and that is the premise of the story and what brings the characters together. The added bonus for me was the education of the terminology of the BDSM world.
I've really been impressed with the books I've read by this author! I like her style of switching between characters thoughts while they are experiencing the event, instead of one chapter through one character's eyes then the next chapter through another character's eyes.
She also has great character development and gets you to invest in their story. She created characters that could be used over and over again in sequels. Brew and Rick finding out more about each other and solving cases along the way. I would love to read another book based on this couple!
I truly enjoyed reading this book.
I was shocked to find out that Men were being bought and sold as sex slaves, by Russians, no less. This book was a real eye opener for me. If they are doing this to men bet me that they are doing the same to women. I liked Rick, he was sort of an innocent going with Brew undercover. I thought Brew was so sexy, and I'll probably have dreams about him.
Seriously I appreciate the story line. Anyone who reads it will receive an education. I gave this book a five. It was a very serious happening in the world... the story was spellbinding...

This book was a bit too all over the place for me. The characters seemed to change through the stories. The undercover agents were the most unbelievable. I still don't understand why Brew would have kept information from Rick on the first bust. There was no reason for it. It was irresponsible and just plain unbelievable.
Then later when Rick was kidnapped he was tortured but supposedly liked it. Even the broken ribs which conveniently disappeared. There is a difference between BDSM and rape/torture but this book does not differentiate. The undercover agent was alone with Rick and instructed not to hurt him by the Russian mafia. There is no reason an undercover agent would decide, on his own, for no reason, to hurt him anyway and still be one of the good guys. I can't even begin on the fact that he never looked through Ricks things for Brew's information. Ugh!
